Description: English 10 is a required course which includes the analysis of the genres of literature from a variety of eras and cultures (novel, poetry, essay, editorials, and science fiction), analysis of the elements of non-fiction, vocabulary development, application of the information management process, the study of grammar, and oral communication skills. Grammar instruction includes the study of sentence formation, usage, and mechanics. Instruction in narrative, analytical, expository, technical, and persuasive compositions reinforces skills studied in the grammar and literature units. Development of reading strategies in increasingly complex texts, writing, and oral communication are part of each unit. The course includes the opportunity to develop research skills through completion of a documented paper.
